The Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) IRIS portal once again faced major technical issues on September 29, 2025, preventing many taxpayers and consultants from filing their income tax returns for Tax Year 2025.
The Lahore Tax Bar Association (LTBA) highlighted the removal of the “Payment of Details” tab from the system, calling it illegal and unjustified. Similarly, Rawalpindi-based consultant Fazal Faraz noted that while a handful of returns were submitted, the system was extremely slow, and critical options disappeared from both the MIS and Maloomat Portal.
At the Federal Tax Ombudsman’s office, tax lawyer Waheed Shahzad Butt stressed that without addressing technical and legal hurdles, taxpayers cannot be expected to meet the September 30 deadline.
The Professional Accountants Forum (PAFO) has also written to the Finance Minister, urging for a general deadline extension until October 31, 2025, in line with Section 118 of the Income Tax Ordinance.
RN Associates’ Comment:
Recurring failures of the IRIS portal not only erode taxpayer confidence but also create legal uncertainty. An immediate extension is the most practical and fair step to protect taxpayers from unnecessary penalties.
